Infant Nutrition Workshop Held at Tishk International University- Faculty of Nursing
The Faculty of Nursing at Tishk International University (TIU) recently organized a successful national workshop titled “Overview of Infant Nutrition” held on November 6th. This national workshop, attended by healthcare professionals, staff and students, was initiated with an inspiring welcome speech by Research Assistant Shaimaa Shahab, followed by a ceremonial rendition of the national anthem.
Prof. Dr. Sultan Abu-Orabi, the president of the Tishk International University, gave the welcome speech, and Dr. Hiwa Banna, the dean of the nursing faculty, gave the welcome speech as well to create a colorful, supportive environment. The workshop aimed to foster a better understanding of the critical nutritional needs of infants to support their optimal growth and development. It focused on breastfeeding and formula feeding, highlighting their roles as vital sources of early nutrition. The workshop also gave an introduction on complementary foods, understanding the appropriate timing and methods to introduce solid foods. Feeding challenges were also discussed, providing information for cases where specialized nutritional support is needed.
The workshop featured in-depth presentations by three experienced speakers, starting by Dr. Norhan Zaki Shaker, who delivered a session on “Infant Nutritional Requirements” providing an extensive overview of essential nutrients for infants. Her presentation detailed key nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients, emphasizing their impact on growth and cognitive development.
Then, Dr. Media Abdullah presented on “Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition,” focusing on infants who require nutrition through alternative methods when oral feeding is not possible. The presentation also explained the clinical indications, benefits, and procedures involved in enteral and parenteral nutrition, providing attendees with practical insights for cases requiring advanced nutritional support. Finally, Parez Shahab, concluded the workshop with a presentation on the “Infant Nasogastric Tube Placement Procedure”, where shared valuable insights into nasogastric feeding techniques, covering the procedural steps, safety measures, and potential complications.
The workshop was attended by 35 staff and students from Faculty of Nursing at TIU. The workshop received high appreciation from attendees, noting the value of learning about diverse aspects of infant nutrition. The engaging and informative presentations by the speakers made a significant impact, providing healthcare providers with critical insights into infant nutrition and care practices.
