International Nurses Day 2024
The Faculty of Nursing at Tishk International University (TIU) commemorated the 2nd International Nurses Day with a comprehensive programme that highlighted the critical contributions of nurses. The event was attended by over 150 students, as well as numerous professors and doctors. The birth of Florence Nightingale, the foundational philosopher of modern nursing, is honoured annually on May 12th, 2024.
International Nurses Day (IND) is commemorated by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) to recognise the critical role that nurses play in communities worldwide. This is an opportunity to convey our gratitude and appreciation for the contributions of nurses in fostering health, healing, and overall well-being in a variety of healthcare environments and communities.
For 2024, the World Health Organisation (WHO) will celebrate Nurses Day with the theme “Nurses Make a Difference.” The event will emphasise the importance of protecting, supporting, and investing in the nursing profession to enhance health systems worldwide.
The event held at TIU commenced with a speech by Prof. Dr. Sultan Abu Orabi, the President of TIU. In his speech, he expressed his gratitude for the nursing profession and the university’s support for the critical role of nurses in the healthcare system.
Additionally, the Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, Prof. Dr. Hiwa Banna, emphasised the faculty’s ongoing projects and recent accomplishments, which are designed to improve the quality of nursing education at TIU.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Faculty of Nursing at Tishk International University and the College of Nursing at Hawler Medical University was officially signed by Professor Prof.Dr. Hiwa Banna, the Dean of the Nursing Faculty at Tishk International University, and Professor Prof.Dr. Vian Naqshbandi, the Dean of the Nursing Department at Hawler Medical University, during this event.
The objective of this agreement is to enhance academic and research opportunities and promote collaboration between the two institutions. Additionally, attendees were treated to the perspectives and experiences of three distinguished keynote speakers during the celebration.
Prof. Dr. Norhan Zaki Shakr, an academic staff member in the Nursing Department, initiated the initial sessions by expounding on the “Sustainable Development Goals and its implications for the nursing profession.”
The second session commenced with Asst. Prof. Dr. Dara Al-Banna, Head of Faculty of Nursing at TIU, who discussed the Curriculum Development of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programme at TIU. The programme is designed to better prepare students for the dynamic field of healthcare and to align with international standards.
Mrs. Asma Yaseen, Research Assistant at the Faculty of Nursing, delivered the final presentation. She provided an enlightening perspective on Rufaida Al-Aslamia as the first nurse in Islam, as well as a soulful historical and cultural significance of nursing within the Islamic tradition and its impact on modern nursing practices during the International Nurses Day celebration.
The event concluded with cake cutting and coffee break, which provided an informal environment for attendees to network, exchange insights, and engage in discussions regarding the day’s presentations.
