Celebrating International Nurses Day and Launches First Aid Training Course
Faculty of Nursing at Tishk International University organized a special event to celebrate International Nurses Day on 11 May 2026, alongside the launch of a four-day First Aid Training Course dedicated to the university community. The event highlighted the vital role of nurses in healthcare and emphasized the university’s commitment to promoting health awareness, emergency preparedness, and student welfare.
The ceremony officially commenced with the Iraqi national anthem, followed by a promotional video introducing the Faculty of Nursing at TIU and its academic and healthcare contributions. A special congratulatory message honoring all nursing students and staff was delivered on behalf of the university presidency.
On the occasion of International Nurses Day, the Presidency of Tishk International University extended its heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to all nurses, nursing staff, and nursing students and also expressed its appreciation and pride for the dedication and humanitarian efforts of nurses in the Kurdistan Region and around the world, wishing them continued success and happiness in their noble profession.
Prof. Dr. Idris Hadi, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of TIU, and Prof. Dr. Sultan Abu Orabi, President of TIU, delivered welcoming speeches in which they congratulated nurses and nursing students on the occasion of International Nurses Day. They praised the dedication, compassion, and essential contributions of nurses to society and healthcare systems worldwide.
Prof. Dr. Hiwa Banna, Dean of Nursing Faculty, also delivered an inspiring speech highlighting the humanitarian role of nurses and their importance in providing quality healthcare services and supporting community wellbeing.
In his presentation, Asst. Prof. Dr. Dara Al-Banna, Head of the Nursing Department, introduced two important units managed by the nursing staff and certified by the American Heart Association (AHA): the Emergency Unit and the Counseling and Welfare Unit. He explained the significance of these units in serving students, staff, and the broader university community.
The audience was then addressed with remarks emphasizing the significance of International Nurses Day as a global occasion that recognizes nurses for their lifesaving efforts, compassionate care, and their role as the backbone of every healthcare system. Attendees were invited to watch a recorded video showcasing the remarkable achievements and contributions of the nursing students and staff at TIU.
Following the video presentation, Ms. Hanan Azad, representative of the Emergency Unit, delivered a detailed presentation about the Emergency Unit at TIU under the Faculty of Nursing. She explained the critical role nurses play within the unit and across the university, highlighting the services provided and the unit’s readiness to respond to emergencies and promote campus safety.
Afterward, Mr. Ismail Khalid, representative of the Counseling and Welfare Unit, presented the services and activities offered by the unit, emphasizing its role in supporting students’ mental health, wellbeing, and overall welfare within the university environment.
Before the conclusion of the event, the nursing staff who successfully obtained American Heart Association (AHA) certification as ASCL providers were honored and rewarded in recognition of their dedication, professional achievements, and continuous hard work.
Among the honored staff members were Ms. Hanan Azad, Ms. Shaimaa Shahab, Mr. Ismail Khalid, Mr. Hilal Farouq, and Mr. Mohammed Harem, who were recognized for their outstanding dedication and active contributions to supporting the university community through professional nursing services and educational activities.
The open event concluded with a joyful coffee break, where attendees gathered in a warm and friendly atmosphere to network, exchange experiences, and celebrate International Nurses Day together. The gathering reflected the spirit of appreciation, unity, and gratitude toward nurses and nursing staff for their invaluable contributions, dedication, and compassionate service to both the university and the wider community.
