“Brain Drain” Sminar Hosted By Nursing Department

On 16th, Novomber 2023 Prof.Dr. Hiwa Banna Dean of Faculty of Nursing, Presented a seminar about “Brain Drain” , In a groundbreaking discovery, scientists are shedding light on the fascinating process of brain detoxification that occurs while we sleep. It turns out that a good night’s sleep is not only crucial for feeling refreshed but also for the brain’s health and longevity.

Clearing Away the Clutter, Just like the rest of the body, the brain generates waste as it goes about its daily activities. During waking hours, toxins and byproducts accumulate in the spaces between brain cells. However, during sleep, the glymphatic system—a waste clearance system in the brain—kicks into high gear. This system helps flush out accumulated waste, including beta-amyloid, a protein associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

Neuronal Maintenance and Repair, Sleep is not just about clearing away toxins; it’s also a time for the brain to engage in maintenance and repair activities. Neurons undergo a process of synaptic pruning, where weak or unnecessary connections are eliminated, making way for stronger, more efficient neural pathways.

Protection Against Neurodegenerative Diseases, The accumulation of toxic substances in the brain has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Adequate, quality sleep may play a protective role, reducing the risk of developing these conditions by facilitating effective detoxification.
